Kindergarten: A Day in the Life

The day starts at 9 am for the Kindergartners, just like for the elementary school. The class begins every morning by gathering in a circle. Here the class has a chance to share things that are important to them, good or bad, and to look ahead to what’s happening for the day.

After circle, the Kindergartners have their first morning activity, and it varies every day. Today it’s math, where they’re playing some fun counting games. They’re using marbles and other manipulatives to help them do basic addition.

As the class wraps up its first activity, they grab a quick snack and get a chance to play and socialize with their friends. Then it’s time for the second morning activity. Today, as part of their study of homes, they’re doing block building representations of their own homes. Afterwards, they’ll discuss how one home is different from another, and what things all homes seem to have in common.

Lunch is next, accompanied by some time to play on the playground – swinging on swings, riding bikes and playing games. Of course, all that playing takes a lot of energy, so lunch is always followed by story time, where the kids get a chance to rest a bit to build up their energy for the next activity.

Today, the afternoon activity is science. And it’s a very exciting experiment the kids are doing. The teacher has climbed on the roof of the school and is dropping various items on the ground. Beforehand, the kids have all made hypotheses about what will happen to an egg when it falls, versus what will happen to a watermelon when it is dropped. Everyone gets a big charge when the watermelon smacks the ground and bursts open. Then, there’s even more excitement as the kids all scramble to eat some of the watermelon!

Just another exciting day in Kindergarten at Foundations!
