THE ARTS AT FSC

The music, drama and movement programs at FSC are woven into the daily fabric of student life, and are an integral part of FSC philosophy. Whilst the arts programs are deeply integrated within the broader academic curriculum, FSC is also unique in recognising that music, drama and creative movement are core subjects in their own right. The principle elements of artistic discovery, creative expression and aesthetic understanding so embedded in good arts practise, are also essential components for Child- Centered learning.

FSC is proud that 12 of its middle school alumni have graduated to The Los Angeles High School for Performing Arts, to study theatre, music and visual art. In addition, three graduates are now Theatre Majors at: The London Drama Centre - England, The Guthrie Theatre - Chicago, and the University of Southern California.

CREATIVE MOVEMENT:Space/Time /Energy/Matter

Students investigate, create and problem solve in a fully kinaesthetic environment. Through guided movement improvisation students learn how to develop, refine and perform multi-layered movement pieces. Students have created unique movement pieces inspired by: Animal Migration/The Seasons/Star Constellations/Geographical Landscapes/The Harbor /Balinese Shadow Puppetry/Native American Studies

• Special Movement Project: ‘The Green Table’

Created in the early 1900’s by visionary choreographer Kurt Zooss. The Green Table is a Dance Drama that seeks to understand the dynamics or war. With Artist in Residence Madeleine Dahm, students are involved in a unique re-creation of the original work. (In 2006, FSC students were invited by The Music Center, in conjunction with the Joffrey Ballet’s performance of The Green Table, to perform an excerpt of the piece in the Grand Hall of the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion)
